llms.txt

Plain markdown file, which gives AI clean, structured map of the content.

Definition

llms.txt is a file you put on https://yourwebsite.com/llms.txt and in which in plain language and markdown you describe what your website offers and you link the most important pages. You can imagine it like robots.txt, which suggests to search engines what they should index, and llms.txt tells LLMs what actually is important on your website and where they can find it.

When AI assistant opens your page, it sees menu, footer, cookie banner and 3 analytics scripts. The real content is somewhere in between. llms.txt skips that noise and serves only what’s important.

Why this matters

  • Context is limited: The cleaner the context you give it, the more accurately it gives the response about content.
  • New source of traffic: People use more AI for questions than to browse themselves. If AI can’t understand your website, it won’t recommend you either.
  • You choose what to emphasize: You can choose which pages to recommend, instead of letting AI guess.
  • Takes literally 10 minutes: One static file, no dependencies, no build steps, no plugins.

Format is simple on purpose: H1 with the name of the site, one paragraph with description, then a few important links and a little more info.

If you want to go a step further, you can also make llms-full.txt with full list of most important pages and their description for LLMs that can handle it.

Next step: Make llms.txt, put 5 to 10 most important links put it in the root of your website.
